Steps to Gain DIRFloortime or other Developmental Approaches

  • DON'T be intimidated by claims that DIRFloortime or other DRBI approaches are not evidenced-based. DIRFloortime and other DRBI approaches are shown to have good effect sizes in published academic, peer-reviewed research studies. See our For Professionals Page.
  • Contact your health insurance: they are required by law to pay for behavioral health treatment for autism in California and many other states as well. If you are not getting a response, partner with our Coalition to advocate for parent choice in your situation.
  • California residents: Contact your regional center service coordinator to discuss your preferences. Document all correspondence with your regional center.
  • You may find a provider through the resources on our For Parents page or the the provider DIRectory at ICDL.com.
  • A thorough diagnostic assessment by a psychologist or physician and a specific recommendation for DIR, Floortime, P.L.A.Y. Project or other DRBI for your child will support your advocacy efforts.
  • Private paying or using regular insurance funding for local professionals trained in DIR/Floortime or other DRBI approaches may be an affordable option to consider for your family while you are advocating for ongoing funding support.
  • Perseverance is essential: You are your child’s strongest advocate.  Stand up and get help to fight it when companies or agencies try to discourage you.
